- After high school, what did you do, where did you go? After high school I attended the only college I applied to, UW-Eau Claire. So, thank goodness I got in! I went in with an “undecided” major because I was not entirely convinced I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. I took all the prerequisites for Nursing thinking that was where I was headed. Thought about the military for a while and decided to take random classes with stuff I thought was interesting. I took one Criminal Justice class and was hooked. I declared my major with Criminal Justice Comprehensive landed an internship with the Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Office as the first female intern then, stumbled into all sorts of careers since. After graduation, I immediately attended the Law Enforcement Academy. After I finished, I went into the prison system as a Correctional Officer. “After my stint in prison” as I like to joke, I did vehicle sales for a while till I got pregnant with our first child. As soon as I found out, I realized that an hour commute, uncontrolled hours, and no use of my degree were not the example I wanted to set for my daughter. I took my 5 remaining classes and completed my certification as a Certified Social Worker with a breastfeeding baby attached. I started working for Juneau County Human Services at 7 months pregnant in their Children Services division and found my calling. Providing children with disabilities access to services and being there to lean on when a parent of a special need’s kiddo requires an advocate, a service or assistance.
- What are you doing now? Upon my husband taking a new position in the Wausau area, I am now a military wife, stay-at-home mom to 3 of my favorite creations, so I guess I have the neediest coworkers ever. I’m just over here waiting and see what door God opens for me next.
- What is your fondest memory from Granton School? The wooden jungle gym out in the “back 40” of the playground during elementary. Being able to be a part of every club, event, sport you wanted. Stating that I graduated with 26 people as a fun fact about yourself. Annual jump in the pond after practice. The people-thank you for shaping me into the person I am.
- What do you think were some of your greatest accomplishments during your time at Granton School? FFA officer, scholarships recipient, part of almost every single sport and almost every club. Solo & Ensemble state participant, co-creating a drum line senior year with my girl, Sonja.
- Which teacher left the biggest impact on your life and why? Mrs. Steinbach- held everyone to a higher standard, and she never settled. She pushed you towards greatness even though you didn’t realize it. Ms. Sturzl-love of music and that one can pick anything up and be successful through practice. Mr. Lambrecht-tried his best to keep you accountable for your actions. Mr. Winters-passion for World War Two/band of brothers series which created many conversations that got my husband interested in me. Mr. Yohn- some have a natural talent for art and some have to work for their projects.
- If you could give one piece of advice to our current students, what advice would that be? You may not be the person or the career path you set out for yourself while in middle/high school. Never stop yourself from seizing an opportunity. You grow in the times you are faced with uncomfortable.
