What is Public School Open Enrollment?
Wisconsin’s inter-district public school open enrollment program allows parents to apply for their children to attend school districts other than the one in which they live. Applications may be submitted to up to three nonresident school districts.
Who may participate in open enrollment?
- Students in 5-year-old kindergarten through grade 12 may apply to participate in open enrollment.
- Open enrollment for prekindergarten, 4-year-old kindergarten and early childhood education is limited.
- Parents should call their resident school districts to find out if their preschool-aged children qualify for open enrollment.
How and when may parents apply?
- The open enrollment application period for the 2025-26 school year is from February 7-April 30, 2025. The application period closes at 4:00 p.m. on April 30, 2025.
Parents may apply in one of two ways:
- Online (recommended)
- Although on-line application is recommended, paper applications may be obtained from the Department of Public Instruction and must be delivered (hand-delivery is recommended) to the nonresident school district.

Can I apply outside of the Open Enrollment Application Period?

Individual attention, a challenging curriculum and small class sizes are what appeals to high school student Sheryl Sebesta. "You have easy access to teachers and they go at a pace where everyone can learn. We have a good variety of classes and if I choose a class I really want to take, there's a good possibility I'll get it. It's easy to interact with teachers in small classes. It's a small community and people know each other."
Parent Success Story:
Chris Anding, parent to three Granton students, believes that small class size and the small community are key to making the school and students more accountable. "There's probably more pressure put on Granton kids to behave and do well because the community knows what's happening." Anding's three children have all been enrolled in Granton Schools since kindergarten and are now thriving in high school. "Small classes help because they're a person to each of their teachers." And Anding says teachers can easily catch on when a student is struggling. "If a child needs help, they get support right away. My youngest would have been lost in a larger school. He wouldn't have gotten the attention he needed to be an honor roll student that he is today."
