Math 1
Granton Area School is continuing to use CPM as the mathematics curriculum this year for grades six through twelve. CPM stands for College Preparatory Mathematics but also for its fundamental principles--cooperative learning, problem-based learning, and mixed, spaced practice.
In sixth grade, we start by learning about different ways to represent "information" in math. We eventually apply this to projects like creating dot plots and histograms, as well as calculating area and perimeter. Students inevitably start to ask some great questions about how different values relate, which leads us to decimals and fractions. By the time the holidays roll around we will be learning about expressions - what they are, how to create them, and how to manipulate them. We end the year learning about Order of Operations and Statistics, which is the perfect preparation for seventh grade.
