Biology
The Science of Biology focuses on understanding living organisms in our surroundings as well as ourselves. This laboratory-based course is designed to teach the essential concepts of biology emphasizing connections within biological systems and between the systems and their environment. All major themes of modern biology are addressed in this course. An underlying theme of the course will be that science is a process through which scientific questions are answered. Instructional strategies include modeling exercises, laboratory, projects, and problem solving exercises that support the NGSS Next Generation Science Standards.
Advanced Biology
Advanced Biology is a course that will survey the nine major phyla of the Kingdom Animalia. Advance Biology is the study of animal life, including their anatomy and interrelationships, their physiology and genetics, and their distributions and habitats. We will be taking a closer look at animal environments, performing several dissections, and building models of animals. As humans, we are intricately tied to animal life – we’ve depended on many of them for food, work, and friendship throughout our evolution and history….not to mention that we ARE animals! Prerequisite: Biology
Anatomy and Physiology
Anatomy and physiology is a course that will enable students to develop an understanding of the relationships between the structures and functions of the human body. Students will also learn the mechanisms for maintaining homeostasis within the human body. This course will involve laboratory activities, projects, dissections, textbook material, models, diagrams, and watching autopsies relating to subject matter. Prerequisite: Biology
Microbiology
Microbiology students will develop a working understanding of, and the skills necessary to, cultivate and study bacteria in the laboratory. Focus of study will be on disease causing bacteria and on viruses. We will be studying infectious diseases, caused by both viruses and bacteria, to develop an understanding of how infectious diseases are transmitted and the prevention/control of its spread. This course is designed for the college bound student interested in Biology or Health field. Prerequisite: Biology
Earth Science
This course introduces scientific investigations, methods, observations and communication along with common tools and methods used for understanding Earth and its environments. Minerals and rocks that make up the Earth's crust, Earth's features, identification, and uniqueness as a planet are also covered in this course. Students will also examine continental drift, seafloor spreading, plate tectonic movement, plate boundaries, landforms, volcanic activity, earthquakes, and mountains resulting from plate tectonic processes as well as surface processes that create and modify landforms. The course also explores water on earth, covering its distribution, states, and the processes involving Earth’s water. Students will learn how features and processes of the atmosphere determine weather and climate, how life is supported on planet Earth, and how scientists learn about Earth's history.
Astronomy
The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop and apply knowledge of the universe and compare the conditions, properties, and motions of bodies in space. This is an introductory course in Astronomy is the scientific study of the contents of the entire Universe. This course will provide the student with a study of the universe and the conditions, properties, and motions of bodies in space. Topics covered are: ancient astronomy, astronomical instruments, the celestial sphere, the solar system, the earth as a system in space, the earth/moon system, the sun as a star, and stars.
Meteorology
Meteorology is an introductory course to the various processes influencing atmospheric and weather phenomena, including concepts related to global climate change, and the impacts of weather and climate on society. This course will introduce students to basic concepts involved in the analysis of weather phenomena. Topics addressed include our atmosphere, seasons, heat and radiation balance, temperature, moisture and atmospheric stability, air pressure and wind, air masses and weather patterns, severe weather, instrumentation, weather analysis and forecasting, as well as, historical storms the improved our ability to predict and respond to our changing weather.
Chemistry
Chemistry is the study of the components of matter and how these components behave and interact with one another. The periodic chart of elements will be studied and analyzed throughout the class to increase understanding of the various components of matter and energy. This Chemistry course also includes: the study of measurements skills, atomic structure, bonding, stoichiometry, states of matter, solutions, acids, bases, and equilibrium, and simple chemical and nuclear reactions. The course includes laboratory experiments designed to reinforce course content and aligns with the Next Genertion Science Standards.
Plant Science
In the class, students will learn about the structure, growth processes, propagation, physiology, growth media, biological competitors, and post harvest factors of food, fiber, and plants. This course is intended to successfully prepare students who plan on majoring in agriculture science at a four-year college or university. FFA instruction and participation is recommended, but not required. Prerequisite: Biology
Food Science
Food Science is a hands-on activities, projects, and problems class that simulate actual concepts and situations found in the food science and safety industry, allowing students to build content knowledge and technical skills. Students will investigate areas of food science including food safety, food chemistry, food processing, food product development, and marketing. Prerequisite: Biology
General Science
General Science is an overview of the sciences of: Biology, Earth and Space, and Ecology. This is an introductory class that allows students to build content knowledge for classes offered in high school. This class is offered to students that have a teacher recommendation.
