In English 1, we’ll be exploring several different types of text: literary nonfiction, short stories, novellas, fiction, informational text, and poetry. We’ll be using these different texts to think about different essential concepts in life while growing our reading and writing skills and our ability to discuss ideas in a healthy way. English II GRADE 10 1.0 CREDIT – Required
In English 2, we’ll build upon our exploration of several different types of text: literary nonfiction, short stories, novellas, fiction, informational text, and poetry through encountering more challenging texts. We’ll be using these different texts to think about different essential concepts in life while growing our reading and writing skills and our ability to discuss ideas in a healthy way. AMERICAN LITERATURE GRADE 11-12 0.5 CREDIT
This year in American Literature we’ll be reading, discussing, and writing about a variety of texts written throughout American History in order to understand what makes American Literature unique. These will vary from historical documents like Thomas Paine's "Common Sense," to short stories like “The Minister’s Black Veil”, “Tell Tale Heart”, “Fall of the House of Usher.” We’ll then jump forward and look at Mark Twain’s novel “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”, and John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men”. CONTEMPORARY NONFICTION GRADE 11-12 0.5 CREDIT
This year in Contemporary Nonfiction I intend to grow myself through reading, discussing, and writing about a variety of texts written by modern authors. These will be various types of nonfiction texts, and will vary in their subject matter. - OFFERED: Yearly.
MYTHOLOGY GRADE 11-12 0.5 CREDIT
Mythology is study of ancient Greek and Roman stories about heroes, gods, and the universe, which illustrates the influence of these myths on the art, literature, and culture of the modern world. The course considers questions such as: What is a deity? What is a hero? What is the relationship of human to god? What is a myth? What is history? Why are myths told? How does recollection of the past affect the way humans live in the present? OFFERED: Even-numbered years.
MULTICULTURAL LITERATURE GRADE 11-12 0.5 CREDIT
This year in Multicultural Literature, I intend to grow in reading, discussing, and writing about a variety of texts written by authors from various cultures. These texts will challenge us to consider different types of people and their perspectives. Reading literature is a low stakes way for us to gain information about different groups of people, and grow our empathy. OFFERED: Odd-numbered years.
POPULAR LITERATURE Grade 11-12 .5 CREDIT
This year in Popular Literature we’ll be reading, writing, and discussing several different types of literary. My hope is that we’ll grow in our ability to critically engage with books we may read that are generally considered popular. As we read different types of literature that we may not have much experience with, my hope is that we'll learn more about who we are as readers.
REAL WORLD WRITING GRADE 11-12 0.5 CREDIT
In Real World Writing we’ll look at a variety of different types of writing that a person would do in a real world context. Some of the real world context that we'll be looking at are: thank you letters, writing a professional email, answering scholarship essay questions, social media, etc. OFFERED: Yearly.
WRITER’S WORKSHOP GRADE 11-12 0.5 CREDIT
In Writer’s Workshop, we’ll be looking to exercise our creative muscles through different forms of writing. We’ll start with looking at different types of figurative language. We’ll then seek to apply these tools to poetry, narrative, memoir and other forms of writing.
