The Reality Store held April 22, 2015 at Granton Area School was designed to provide Granton Area Middle School students with a glimpse of the cost of living. The goal of this event was to help students learn basic skills in financial planning, goal setting, decision making and career planning. The Reality Store was like a “big game of life” that helps students see in a real way what the future holds relative to career, family, and bills. It will help students examine their attitudes about their futures and career expectations. After this experience through The Reality Store, students developed a more realistic idea of the financial impact their future decisions will have.
The Reality Store provided students with an opportunity to create a monthly budget with the profession of their chose. Before the store opens students are assigned a gross income. Students were given a marital and family as they entered the Reality Store. This was their first glimpse at how some things in life could be unpredictable. With this information, students visit the store to create a monthly budget that includes housing, groceries, and everything else a household faces. It is a valuable piece of helping students put the puzzle of their future together. Students were to end up with money left over in their checking accounts.
